The Boat - March 2024

Ah, March marked a monumental milestone for me as I embarked on my inaugural watercolour workshop journey. Teaching the art of watercolour has been a cherished dream of mine for years, though I often questioned if I was ready to take the plunge. Yet, in the months leading up to that first workshop, I immersed myself in daily painting sessions, steadily gaining confidence until I felt prepared to take the leap.

Persistence paid off when, after weeks of waiting, I finally secured a booking at a nearby retirement village. Inspired by the tranquil imagery of a boat painting, I sought advice from my trusty Facebook Watercolour community, despite facing scepticism from many who deemed the task too daunting. Ignoring the naysayers, I followed my intuition, and to my delight, the workshop was a resounding success—a promising start to what I hope will be an exciting journey ahead.

Transitioning from teaching children to guiding seniors in retirement villages has ignited a newfound passion within me. Beyond imparting painting techniques, it's about fostering fellowship, forging friendships, and bringing joy to those I encounter. In a world where the elderly are sometimes overlooked, I find immense fulfilment in providing them with an avenue for creative expression and perhaps sparking an interest in a new hobby.

As someone with family oceans away in South Africa, I understand the importance of companionship and meaningful engagement, especially for those who may not have children nearby. For me, teaching isn't just about sharing my artistic talents—it's about dedicating my time, sharing my love for what I do, and creating moments of connection that transcend the strokes of a brush.

Landscape painting holds a special place in my heart—it's where I find solace and comfort. As I crafted the boat painting, I envisioned myself standing on the riverbank, basking in the warmth of the sun, perhaps enjoying a leisurely picnic or casting a line for fishing. Each stroke of paint was not just an artistic expression but a portal to a world of relaxation and serenity—a moment captured on canvas to be shared and cherished by all.
